MEET LORENA

A lifelong educator, mother, and community leader, Lorena Chavez is running for re-election to the East Side Union High School District Board Trustee Area 4 to continue fighting for educational excellence and opportunity for all students. She lives in San José with her husband and their two children.

As a teacher, principal, and now Board Vice President, Lorena has spent her entire career in service of East Side students. During her tenure, she co-founded the Digital Equity Coalition — bringing in $10 million for internet access — and partnered with the City of San José to launch East Side Access, providing free Wi-Fi to over 300,000 residents.

Her leadership also expanded dual college enrollment and college access opportunities, strengthened career-technical pathways, and prioritized mental-health supports for students and families. She believes every child deserves a world-class education — no matter their ZIP code.

Lorena is a proud native of San José and graduate of the East Side Union High School District. After attending UC Davis, she earned dual bachelor’s degrees in International Relations and Sociology.

She also received her Master’s Degree in Education. In addition, she holds both a teaching credential and an administrative credential. She taught math at Lee Mathson Middle School, where she launched the AVID Program to help more students prepare for college and career success.
